In this guide, we walk you through the step-by-step installation of a 24-foot LED string light kit and how to integrate it with a third-generation Echo Dot. This setup adds smart lighting and voice control to your patio or pool area, allowing you to enjoy weather updates, news, and music with simple voice commands. Let’s explore how it’s done!
The Echo Dot was mounted to the ceiling using a DIY bracket made from repurposed metal plates and zip ties. Here's the process:
| Button Press | Result |
|---|---|
| 1 Press | Warm white light |
| 2 Presses | Color rotation (red, green, blue) |
| 3 Presses | Color lock |
To reset the lights, unplug them briefly. The controller does not have mounting holes, so wire clips were added at the top and bottom to secure it effectively.
After two weeks of use, the LED string lights have proven reliable and stylish. The ability to change colors and use voice commands enhances outdoor gatherings. Mounting the Echo Dot to the ceiling created a seamless smart experience, and the included extra bulbs ensure longevity. Highly recommended for DIY enthusiasts looking to elevate their patio lighting.

Brightech Ambience Pro - Waterproof LED Outdoor String Lights
It’s the season for the great outdoors! In this episode, we’ll show you how to light up your backyard with a 24-foot LED string light and integrate it with a third-generation Echo Dot for smart control. Perfect for the patio or poolside, this setup provides voice-activated music, weather, and news. Let’s go!
This 24-ft outdoor string light includes 12 LED bulbs and 2 extras for replacements. The lights have three modes: warm white, color rotation (RGB), and color lock. The kit comes fully assembled with a user manual.
To install, you’ll need a drill, hammer, hooks or screws, wire clips, anchors, and a ladder. Holes are spaced 24 inches apart, but can be adjusted for appearance. The cord is thick and commercial-grade.
We used two install methods: with hooks and with screws. For stucco walls, drill slightly smaller holes than the anchor for a tight fit. We started installation from inside the patio near the window and worked our way around, securing each bulb location by drilling, anchoring, and screwing into place.
We then mounted the controller near the window. Initially, we used double-sided sticky tape, but it didn’t hold well on stucco. Later, we reinforced it with wire clips above and below. The lights require a standard three-prong outlet.
Next, we mounted the Echo Dot to the ceiling. Our first two DIY attempts using wire and wood failed. Finally, we used metal plates with bent ends, anchored them to the ceiling, and used zip ties to secure the Dot. It blends in well thanks to its black components.
Once connected, the Echo Dot powered on with the lights. A voice command confirmed it worked: “Alexa, what’s the weather?” Response: 84°F, mostly cloudy in Las Vegas.
We finalized the setup with more wire clips for clean cable management. The lighting modes are controlled via the button:
If needed, unplug the string to reset. These LED bulbs only use 18 watts, are energy-efficient, and long-lasting. After two weeks, we’re loving them—especially the vibrant blue glow over the pool. Highly recommended!
