If you're setting up a home network for the first time or need help getting started, this guide is for you. By the end, you’ll know exactly how to build and secure your home network from scratch.

Step 1: Choose your ISP
Consider three factors: speed, reliability, and budget. Choose a plan that suits your household size and usage. Fiber is the best option if available.

Step 2: Get the right modem or ONT
Based on your connection type (DSL, cable, or fiber), choose the appropriate device. For fiber, you'll use an ONT that converts light signals into data for your router.

Step 3: Pick a wireless router
Look for one that supports your internet speed and needed features. Consider Wi-Fi 6, 6E, or Wi-Fi 7 for better speeds and security. Look for WPA3 support and MLO if using Wi-Fi 7.

Step 4: Connect your router
Use Cat 6 cables and place the router centrally in your home. Run longer Ethernet if needed for best placement.

Step 5: Configure your router
Access it via web browser or the manufacturer’s app. Change the admin credentials immediately for security.

Step 6: Configure Wi-Fi
Create unique SSIDs for each band. Use strong passwords with a mix of characters. If your router supports MLO, configure that SSID too.

Step 7: Connect your devices
Connect wireless devices using SSID and password. For wired connections, plug into LAN ports or use switches for more ports.

Step 8: Speed test
Use websites like Speedtest.net to check performance. Wired speeds should match your ISP’s promised speeds. Wi-Fi performance depends on band and router model.

Step 9: Secure your network
Enable router firewalls. Use strong passwords. Change DNS to Cloudflare Family (1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3) for malware and adult content blocking.

This guide covers the essentials. For more advanced topics like VLANs, PoE, or port forwarding, check out more videos on Ultimate Tech Hub.
