Fix Common Plex Server Problems with These Simple Solutions

If you’ve run into issues with your Plex server—like media not showing, buffering during playback, or subtitle problems—you’re not alone. In this guide, we walk through 8 common Plex server issues and how to fix them easily and quickly.

Top 8 Plex Server Issues and Easy Fixes Explained

8 Common Plex Server Issues and How to Fix Them

  1. Media Unavailable or Server Offline
Solution: Sign out of the device and log back in using the TV link code. Then activate the link at plex.tv/link.
  2. Remote Streaming Not Working
Solution: Get a Plex Pass and enable remote access. Forward port 32400 in your router to allow outside connections.
  3. Slow Library Scanning or Metadata Issues
Solution: Use correct file naming conventions, store metadata on SSDs, and refresh or manually correct metadata.
  4. Audio Playback Errors or Codec Not Supported
Solution: Enable automatic transcoding, match server and device audio settings, or re-sync separate audio/video recordings.
  5. Subtitles Missing or Out of Sync
Solution: Use external SRT subtitle files, adjust subtitles during playback, or use files with burned-in subtitles.
  6. Buffering and No Video Playback
Solution: Ensure your NAS is powerful enough, use wired connections, enable hardware transcoding, and reduce stream quality if remote.
  7. High CPU Usage from Transcoding
Solution: Enable hardware acceleration, use efficient formats like MP4 (H.264 + AAC), and avoid unnecessary transcoding.
  8. Server Crashing or Freezing
Solution: Update to the latest Plex version, monitor CPU/RAM usage, run Plex on a dedicated NAS, clear cache, and rebuild the library if needed.

By addressing these common issues, your Plex server will run smoother and more reliably—whether you're watching locally or halfway around the world.

The Plex server is a fantastic way to organize and stream your collections of movies, TV shows, music, and photos. But that doesn’t mean it’s flawless. Over the last 10+ years, I’ve run into several common issues—and I’m here to walk you through 8 of them and how to fix each one.

1. Media Unavailable or Offline
This usually happens when your Plex server is turned off or signed out. You’ll see a yellow exclamation mark. Simply sign out on the device, sign back in using the TV link code, and activate the connection via plex.tv/link.

2. Remote Streaming Not Working
Remote streaming requires a Plex Pass. Make sure it's active, then go into Plex settings and enable remote access. If it's not accessible, manually forward port 32400 on your router.

3. Slow Library Scanning or Metadata Problems
Use Plex’s recommended naming formats—movie title with year, TV show name with correct episode number. Store metadata on an SSD and refresh manually if needed. You can also add posters manually.

4. Audio Not Working or Codec Not Supported
Enable automatic transcoding in Plex settings. Ensure both the server and client device support audio formats like DTS or Dolby. For separate audio/video files, sync them in video editing software.

5. Subtitles Not Displaying or Out of Sync
Use external SRT files—these are widely supported. You can adjust subtitles manually during playback. Burned-in subtitles also avoid compatibility problems.

6. Buffering, Stuttering, or No Playback
This may be due to network congestion or server limitations. Use direct play for local streaming and wired connections when possible. Enable hardware transcoding for better performance.

7. High CPU Usage from Transcoding
Enable hardware acceleration. Convert high bitrate files to efficient formats like H.265. Stick to MP4 (H.264 + AAC) to minimize the need for transcoding.

8. Plex Server Crashes or Freezes
Most crashes stem from memory issues or outdated software. Keep Plex updated. Monitor CPU/RAM usage, close background tasks, and run Plex on a dedicated NAS. Rebuild your database and clear cache regularly. As a last resort, reinstall Plex.
