Installing a WD Blue NVMe SSD in Your PC

On today's video, we're going to show you how to install an NVMe SSD. This install works for all brands of NVMe drives. Today, we're installing a Western Digital 1TB Blue SN550 NVMe SSD.

This installation guide is for motherboards that have an M.2 slot. If your motherboard is older and does not have an M.2 slot, check out our other video on installing an NVMe SSD using a PCIe adapter.

To get a better camera angle, I removed the GPU—though this isn’t necessary in most installs.

To install and secure the 1TB NVMe SSD, remove the M.2 screw on the motherboard. This screw secures the drive—so don’t lose it!

Once the screw is removed, insert the NVMe SSD into the M.2 slot. Make sure it’s pushed in fully. The SSD will stick up like a flap—this is normal. Use the screw you removed earlier to fasten the drive back down to the motherboard. This holds it flat and secure.

And that’s it for the hardware install!

To get the drive working, turn the computer back on and log into Windows. Next, go to Disk Management. You’ll be prompted to initialize the disk. After that, you’ll see your new drive listed. Right-click it and select “Create Simple Volume.” Follow the prompts and you’re done.

This installation process applies to all NVMe SSDs—it’s straightforward once you’ve done it once or twice.
